After hearing a couple of different business associates mention the Mandarin Restaurant in Bountiful, Utah. I put it on the list of “when in Rome”, or in this case “when in Bountiful”. Only two months later I found myself in Bountiful, and right at dinner time.
Tucked off the beaten path, behind a warehouse business was the restaurant. The interior, though beautiful, looked like a tinderbox with lots of nooks and crannies. Seated quickly, the place had a buzz of a Friday night with all but a few empty booths (from what we could see).
The appetizer, pot stickers were absolutely wonderful, and plenty for two, but a third would have had to fight for two. Nicely browned crisp on one side with a good dipping sauce.
The Egg Flower Soup, for two had a nicer than locally served soup base, thickened with the egg like it should be, however I don’t get the addition of the other items, like corn, never have and never will.
The egg roll was not to my liking, my partner loved it but to me it was way too sweet, and in a filo type dough to boot. Oh, I forgot to mention that the Mandarin Restaurant fuses Mediterranean with Asian, and it’s the reason we selected one of the main dishes. Lamb with Vegetables in a fusion red/brown sauce.
I could have done without the water chestnuts, but I don’t tend to favor them other than on occasion and sparingly. Way too many for the dish portion. The sauce was slightly sweet, and had a nice flavor against the sliced lamb but it almost drowned out the vegetables were it not for them being so fresh. I swear the beans and carrots were picked that day.
All in all, the Mandarin Restaurant deserves and A+
