America's fascination with the hamburger continues along with the sudden escalation of new burger joints entering Utah's restaurant scene.
Smashburger a Denver based chain arrived in Utah to a somewhat muted response, possibly due in part to the simultaneous announcement of the entry of In-N-Out Burger.
Today's visit to the Salt Lake City Sugarhouse location was not visually impressive, it had a very dark interior with a funky and dysfunctional layout. The overly large SIZZLE on the wall made it even more so.
The most surprising element to me was that the kitchen was hidden. With a name like Smashburger you want to see it being made, the name, would seem to be a part of the concept. The kitchen being hidden behind an enormous wall made it feel industrial, cavernous and sleazy.
My burger had an unexpected burst of salt in one bite that made me cry, not exactly a good thing in a burger.
The herb tossed fries however were worth the price and maybe, maybe even making it worth giving Smashburger another try when I'm not feeling so pinched. Then again $20 for two small burgers, a basic Chicago dog and one small fry (no drinks) is overpriced period.
