Eggs in the City, I'll Take Mine On the Side
The Review

Eggs in the City is a cute little place tucked into an old gas station in one of Salt Lake City's bungalow neighborhoods. Owned by proprietor Heather Santi-Harrison, a young lady clearly in control of her establishment that appears to be run as smooth as butter.

Despite our choosing to go at the peak busy hour on a Sunday, the wait wasn't near as long as we'd expected and we even received prime patio seating with just our party of two. I had expected that we might receive a small inside table since the patio tables had seating for four persons per table.

We ordered the Biscuits and Gravy with Eggs and Sausage at the recommendation of our server, she also recommended the Ranchero Breakfast, smothered in red ranchero sauce, but we weren't in the mood for something that heavy. We added a single slice of French Toast with Strawberries to our order since there were two of us.

While we waited for our order I couldn't help notice that the fresh fruit side seemed wonderful, overflowing the small dish with kiwi, pineapple, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and cantaloupes will surely be on my list next time we return.

The food arrived quickly, but I was taken aback by the eggs being on top of the biscuits, smothered in gravy and topped with cheddar cheese and the sausage. (I politely asked for it to be remade with the egg served on the side)

The gravy was a bit bland and was already separating, the biscuit was also a bit flavorless, almost having the texture of a pan "Bisquick" biscuit. The sausage was fair, not much bite. The seasoned potatoes were served a bit too cold. As many who read my reviews know, I prefer my potatoes served hot, they just don't have the same taste when served cold.

The crowd at Eggs in the City is a bit pretentious, involved in themselves and there to show off their $200 jeans, $250 sunglasses and the new BMW more so than the meal. The service on the other hand was excellent, the owner friendly and warm and the hostess pleasant and cheerful.

Reservations are not accepted but you can call ahead to place your name on the waiting list, thereby shortening or minimizing the wait for a table.

Overall rating B+
