Mazza has two locations, one in the 15th and 15th neighborhood and their location in the 9th and 9th neighborhood. Mazza has been on our list for a very long time. That opportunity to give them a try came this week when a spur of the moment lunch led us to their door.
The interior of Mazza is spectacular, the ornate lamp fixtures are beautiful. The decor comes across as sleek and clean while affording lot's of visual color for the eye.
We ordered the Lamb Kebab, cooked medium rare which came served as a sandwich 'pita style' with a fresh salsa fresca style on a base of pickled veggies. You had a choice of yourt sauce or a sun dried tomato sauce. I was hoping for a skewered kabaob on rice. Apparently that is a dish that is only served with dinner.
A sampler plate of three sides: Basmatti rice cooked in clarified butter, Stuffed Grape Leaves and Loobia. The Basmatti rice had a slight hint of the clarified butter, it was very light and not a sticky grain in sight but it would have been better with a small side or drizzle of the butter at serving. The Loobia, a mix of green beans slowly cooked along with a meat, very oily but delicious. The Stuffed Grape Leaves were excellent, not overpowering like some and cooked nice and tender.
Mazza deserves another visit, maybe next time we will stop in for dinner instead so we can try a broader selection of items from their menu.
