Our visit to the Bayleaf Cafe was a last minute decision.
They're located in Downtown Salt Lake on Main Street. Parking is a nightmare since Salt Lake had thousands of parking spots removed during the construction of City Creek Center but we lucked into a metered spot just steps away from the restaurant.
It was a late lunch, but I was pleased to see that breakfast is served all day. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs but quickly changed my mind when I spotted Blackened Catfish on the menu.
We ordered the Barbeque Shrimp and Cheese Grits on the recommendation of the owner, the Blackened Catfish and side of Collard Greens and Black Eyed Peas along with the Adobo Chicken Rice Bowl.
Beverages were served in large mason jars, but too our surprise they did not have sweet iced tea, a Southern staple. The server said they had only been open a week so they were still getting things worked out on how much of what to order.
Everything arrived prompt. The temperature of the cheese grits was a little cold, they should always be served piping hot. The shrimp were doused in a barbeque sauce that had more of a picante flavor than a traditional BBQ.
The Blackened Catfish along with two sides was delicious, the Black Eyed Peas had large pieces of bacon and plenty of spice but the Collards lacked any flavor, they were very fresh but a little too bland and missing any type of fat, At minimum they should have been served along with some Tabasco or vinegar.
The Rice Bowl was ample, plenty of fresh vegetables and meat to go with the rice base.
The plates lacked color, I think that a garnish goes along way especially when serving side dishes in ramekins and a garnish would have balanced out the plates.
On my next visit I will have to try the breakfast, in addition to regular Monday - Thursday hours they're open 24 hours from Friday 6am through Sunday evening at 6pm.
