I find it funny that sometimes, no, often times we don’t know our own backyards as well as we know our neighbors. How a good, no wonderful little restaurant existed in our own backyard and it took me nearly five years to finally give it a chance makes me smile if not chuckle to myself.
The Cafe on Main, a small cozy brick building on the north corner of Main Street at 2700 South in Salt Lake City houses an intimate sized Balkan restaurant.
We stopped in for lunch on a whim. Pleased by the simple and what appeared to be almost too low per plate pricing we ordered two plates of what I guess could be described as a goulash? It didn’t have a name as best I could tell from the server, it was pictured, looked good and we went with that.
It was a wonderful stew of tomato, spices and vegetables served alongside boiled potato for $6 a plate served with a very pungent Italian bread and butter.
Charlie our guest had a liver plate, with fries for $7 that was ample sized, and really could serve two people easily. A garlic pesto topped the liver offering a good balance to what many may not consider their first choice for lunch or dinner for that matter.
Here’s to what I hope is a long and successful run for the Cafe on Main.
